OpenAI says 'You exceeded your current quota' on my very first request

Brand new API key, first call ever:

Error code: 429 - {'error': {'message': 'You exceeded your current quota, please check your plan and billing details.', 'type': 'insufficient_quota', 'code': 'insufficient_quota'}}

I have ChatGPT Plus so I thought the API is included?

What I’ve tried

Made a new key, same thing. Waited an hour in case it's rate limit.

ChatGPT Plus and the API are billed separately. The API is prepaid: go to platform.openai.com → Settings → Billing and add credits (minimum is small). Then it works, sometimes after a few minutes.

insufficient_quota = no money on the account. A "real" rate limit says rate_limit_exceeded instead, and waiting helps for that one.

While you're in billing: turn off auto-recharge, or set a low limit, until you know your usage. And never put that key in frontend code.

Had the same last month. Heads up that a brand new paid account also starts on the lowest usage tier, so rate limits are low for the first days. If you get 429 with rate_limit_exceeded later, that's why. It goes up automatically as you spend.
