I push to GitHub but Vercel doesn't deploy, commit shows a red X

Everything worked for weeks. Since yesterday my pushes don't deploy. On GitHub the commit has a red X from Vercel and the details say something like "No GitHub account was found matching the commit author email address". Nothing changed on my side except I started letting Claude Code make the commits.

What I’ve tried

Reconnected the GitHub integration in Vercel. Made an empty commit from the GitHub website, that one deployed fine.

The web commit works because GitHub uses your account email. Your local commits use whatever git config user.email is on your machine, and on a fresh Mac that's often something like greta@Gretas-MacBook.local. Vercel can't link that to a GitHub user, so it won't deploy it.

git log -1 --format='%an <%ae>'   # see what's being used
git config --global user.email "the-email-on-your-github-account@example.com"

Then push a new commit. If you want to keep your email private, use the ...@users.noreply.github.com address from GitHub's email settings instead.

It was greta@Gretas-MacBook-Air.local. Set the email, new commit deployed. Claude Code just uses my git config, so it wasn't its fault after all. greta_m 4 months ago · edited

Related gotcha on Hobby: with a private repo, commits by anyone other than you (a collaborator, a bot account) are blocked too. If you ever add a teammate, that's the next red X you'll see.
